Work Location: Apopka, FL (Hybrid eligible based on organizational needs)

Position Summary

The Community Organizer builds Hope CommUnity Center’s grassroots leadership, strengthens community power, and mobilizes residents to advance the community's priorities. Reporting to the Director of Organizing, this position develops trusted relationships with community members, recruits and mentors emerging leaders, supports organizing campaigns, and builds long-term community capacity to address issues affecting historically marginalized communities. The Community Organizer works primarily in the field, fostering community relationships and advancing HCC's movement-building strategy.

What You'll Do

Movement Building & Community Organizing (40%)

    • Build authentic relationships with community members, leaders, organizations, and institutions.
    • Conduct 1:1 meetings, listening sessions, and community outreach to identify priorities/opportunities for collective action.
    • Recruit, mentor, and develop community leaders and volunteers.
    • Strengthen grassroots leadership by creating pathways for residents to take active roles in organizing efforts.
    • Build long-term community power through sustained relationship building, leadership development, and community engagement.

Community Focus (25%)

African American & Haitian Community

    • Build trusted relationships with Black and Haitian residents, churches, faith leaders, and community organizations.
    • Develop culturally responsive organizing strategies that reflect community priorities and lived experiences.
    • Recruit and engage Black and Haitian residents in leadership development, organizing campaigns, advocacy efforts, and community events.
    • Strengthen partnerships that expand organizing capacity and community leadership throughout Central Florida.

Campaigns, Coalitions & Community Engagement (20%)

    • Support organizing campaigns through outreach, volunteer recruitment, community education, and public engagement.
    • Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, coalitions, schools, faith communities, and local institutions.
    • Ensure community participation in HCC coalition meetings, community events, trainings, and public actions.
    • Connect community members to HCC programs, leadership development opportunities, and organizing initiatives.

Data, Evaluation & Administrative Support (15%)

    • Maintain accurate records of outreach, volunteer engagement, partnerships, and campaign activities.
    • Track community engagement, leadership development, and organizing outcomes.
    • Assist with grant reporting, program evaluation, and storytelling.
    • Coordinate logistics for meetings, trainings, and community events.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You'll Bring

Required Qualifications

    • Two (2) or more years of experience in community/grassroots organizing, advocacy, or community engagement.
    • Demonstrated ability to build authentic relationships and organize diverse communities around shared goals.
    • Strong facilitation, communication, public speaking, and relationship-building skills.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and digital collaboration tools.
    • Reliable transportation and the ability to travel throughout Central Florida.
    • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
    • Bilingual in English and Haitian Creole.
    • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working with immigrant communities and other historically marginalized populations.
    • Experience with coalition building, advocacy campaigns, leadership development, or movement building.
    • Experience facilitating community meetings, trainings, or leadership development programs.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

    • Primarily community-based with hybrid office work as needed.
    • Frequent local travel throughout Central Florida is required.
    • Regular evening and weekend work for community meetings, trainings, outreach, campaigns, and events.
    • Ability to remain active for extended periods while conducting outreach and community engagement.
    • Ability to lift and transport outreach materials up to 25 pounds.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range: $44,081–$47,080 annually or 21.19 – 22.63 per hour
